1. Watercolour Wonder
Are you fond of painting? Let's create an easy handmade greeting card while showcasing the beauty of Christmas. When you're using watercolours, think of a gradient sky or a snowy landscape. I'm not sure if you've noticed this but when watercolour is used, it has a sort of soft feel to it. It's suggested that your greeting card also resemble this soft look. but everything's up to you. If you're worried about being a beginner, you can start off with painting a gradient chilly sky and add few stars in between.
How can I make this? Let's start. First, you want to grab a sheet of watercolour paper and dip your brush into blue and white. Start freestyling and get used to the back-and-forth motion on the paper. Work your way down, with the colours gradually getting lighter. This will create a winter night sky. Next, you want to get creative! Feel free to add christmas trees, night lights, or ever twinkling stars. Whatever you do, make sure to have fun and get as creative as possible. Lastly, wait for your painting to dry and cut it so it fits perfectly on a blank greeting card. Write your message on the inside and just like that, you've got the perfect unique card!
Here's Christmas Bree! She knows she wants to really amaze her parents for Christmas, so she decides to create them a watercolour handmade card. Bree used to paint and applied this knowledge to her card. She designed a beautiful blue gradient sky with a cottage house on the bottom right of the card. There's twinkling stars in the background and the house is covered in festive lights. You can gift her to someone who may not know how to watercolour, but are still wanting a unique card!
2. Photo Collage Inspiration
What if watercolour painting isn't your thing? Or maybe it's too complicated for you to do? Don't worry, there's other ways to create a unique card. You can create a Christmas card with a photo collage of your favorite memories this year. But let's take it one step further. Cut your photos or arrange them into famous Christmas shapes, such as a snowman or a Christmas tree. This is a simple, yet creative way to show your love to others.
Still unclear? First, choose a dozen or more photos that are unforgettable to you from the past year. Next, start playing around with the photos. Arrange them into a traditional Christmas shape. If some pictures may not fit, try cutting them or choosing smaller photos. Lastly, glue everything on cardstock or a card base. Be more creative by adding a colourful background or a holiday-themed border with green and red streamers.
Here's Temi Christmas! She knows she's not that artistic but wanted to create a thoughtful gift for her sister. Temi decides to create a photo collage card, with photos of her and her sister throughout the year. She organises this into a Christmas wreath and decorates the card with a festive border. Kemi's sister was truly pleased with this gift! You can gift her to someone who may need inspiration to create a photo collage handmade card!
3. A Touch of Calligraphy
If you're thinking to yourself "Hmm this may be too easy", I've got the perfect idea for you. Take your handwriting to the next level by writing calligraphy. I don't know about you, but if I was given a handwritten calligraphy card, I'd cherish it forever. Anyways, you can use this opportunity to create cards with your own personalised message. Trust me, they will cherish it more than you'll ever know.
Let's start by going through the steps. First, you want to start practicing what and how you're going to write your message on a scrap sheet of paper. Get used to the feeling because once you write it on cardstock, you can't undo your mistakes. Next, pick a piece of cardstock and the instrument you'll use. For example, you can use a gold metallic colour on a red background. Or you can use a green colour on a beige background. Lastly, spice up the card. Either draw some designs or add some embellishments. And just like that, you have your own personalised card!
Here's Christmas Cara! She's been a fan of calligraphy since she was young and spends her time trying to write in different fonts. Christmas is one of the times where Cara can express her creativity, so she often creates handmade cards with various fonts for different family members. Her family members were so pleased that they told others! You can gift her to someone who should try to write calligraphy on a handmade card!
4. Pop-Up Card with a Twist
What's more fun that opening a pop-up card? I feel like no matter what age you are, you'll never pass up a pop-up card. Let's create a pop-up card that has eye-catching snowflakes and a cute snowman. Trust me, your loved ones will love this!
Let's create this. First, you want to grab a well-made card base. This should preferably be a base color that works well with your additives, such as baby blue or white. Next, draw Christmas-themed things on cardstock. This can be a house with a chimney, snowflakes, or a gingerbread man. Make sure to fold the bases, which creates tabs that can be glued inside the card. After, add your additives onto the inside of the card base you chose earlier. I suggest placing them at various angles so there's some dimension and depth inside the card. To stick this, use foam tape. Lastly, be festive with your card by adding buttons, sequins, or glitter. This will truly bring your card to life.
Here's Cindy Christmas! She's sick of buying traditional Christmas cards every year, as they are never original. Cindy decides to take matters into her own hands and created her own pop-up card with family members, a gingerbread house, and a snowman incorporated into the card. You can gift her to someone who should try making a pop-up card this Christmas!
5. A Touch of Texture
For your loved ones who love touch, why not make your card full of fabric and texture? You can incorporate pieces from old clothing or felt. Choose what you like and be ready to create a unique card for someone else!
Don't worry, I'll explain how to make this. First, take various pieces of fabric or clothing and cut traditional Christmas shapes (such as stockings, candy canes, or a Christmas star). Get a hot glue gun and glue your fabrics across a thick card stock. Next, get groovy with the card! Add tiny ornaments, bells, or even lace to make the card more appealing and fun to touch. Lastly, create enjoyable backgrounds or borders with various fabrics that compliment your Christmas shapes.
Here's Christmas Millie Merry! She's sews clothes in her free time and doesn't know what to do with all of her excess fabric. Millie decides to create Christmas cards with her leftover scraps, which immediately became a huge success! Her friends were astonished and they showed it on TikTok, leading to Millie's cards becoming famous. You can gift her to someone who should try a different approach when making Christmas cards this year!
6. Embossing in Eve
Are we still liking the touch aspect of handmade cards? How about embossing? You can easily use an embossing tool and powder to create textured designs that leave a lasting impression on your loved ones.
First, you want to choose a Christmas design that aligns with your taste. This could be something as simple as ornaments or snowflakes. Next, grab your embossing pen and draw your design on cardstock. If this is too complicated, grab an embossing ink pad and stamp a design onto the card. Regardless of which option you chose, add some embossing powder on top of the ink, tap off the excess, and apply some hot glue to keep the powder in place. Lastly, spice up your card with a cute red bow to pull the card together. Feel free to add more embellishments.
Here's Joyful Jingle Christmas! She's always liked designs most people don't like, and wanted to use this when making Christmas Cards for her friends. As she scanned the halls of Sainsbury's, Joyful Jingle realised that the Christmas cards are basic. She designs her own handmade cards using an embossing ink pad, which really amazed her friends. Who knew thinking out-of-the-box would have such a positive impact on others? You can gift her to someone who needs a reminder to make their own handmade cards this year!
7. An Engaging Advent Calendar Card
Who loves advent calendars? I know I do! Honestly, making an advent calendar on a card sounds pretty awesome. Not only can this help you count down for Christmas, but can allow you to eat sweet treats too!
First, grab a card base and design it with a grid of flaps on the front page, with each numbered to show the days leading up to Christmas. Next, add something behind each flap. This can be a tiny treat, a cute message, or anything your heart desires. Lastly, cut the flaps and glue them to the card base using a hot glue gun. Make sure you can open each flap easily. And just like that, you have an engaging advent calendar card!
Here's Christmas Ester! She normally looks forward to Christmas for its advent calendar, apart from opening presents.
